7 things that show how failure helps us.
This is what J.K Rowling, one of the most popular writer and novelist has to say about ‘Failure’.
“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.” – J.K Rowling
Here are the 8 picks based on my experience
1. Failure helps us in filtering people..!
Success lures people just like sweet lures houseflies..! The best thing Failure does is that it helps us to get rid of all the phonies and fake friends that we have. This has perks:
- Saves our precious time in future
- Prevents back-stabs by trusted ones
- No need to waste resources on unreliable people
- No need to worry about those who leave.
- Those who are with you are there to stay for ever..!
So, the earlier and the more you fail in your life, the better and more reliable your friend circle becomes.
2. Realize our weakness
We realize our weaknesses in many mystical ways. Sometimes, it can be by getting criticized or when some one else exploits it..! However, failure helps us to understand our weakness in an entirely different level.!
How? No matter what other people see and judge. No matter what reasons or feedback we get, we know the real reason for our failure. By the end of the day, it was we who faced the challenge and we who failed right? Sometimes, it just takes time to realize the real ‘weakness’. If failing multiple times is an option, I would always choose it since I can make sure of the reason by doing multiple trial-and-errors.!
3. Gives enough time to grow our roots
Some of us take failure very seriously. When we fail, it seems as if there is a silent ‘Gap’ between us and everything else in the world for a while. Some sort of isolation, some kind of haunted feeling. And as I told you in reason 1, we are left alone. This is actually good..! Very good..!!
How? Read the story of Chinese Bamboo below: I have even shared this before with my Co-Authors to motivate them..!
People would say that Bamboo grows to its full-height in just 6 months..! Logically, it takes 5 years and 6 months to grow isn’t it?
4. Increases patience.
Failure helps by increasing the threshold of our tolerance level. The disappointment, humiliation and inferiority sometimes are the thorns. The more and more we keep failing, we come closer and closer to understand the saying:
Success isn’t a result of spontaneous combustion.
Success is a journey and not a destination.
5. Failure helps us to re-discover
- There is a reason why I am saying this.
- Most of the inventions and discoveries came as a result of failure(s).
- What may seem like a failure today.. could become a solution of another problem tomorrow.
- Failure may not set a ‘Role-Model’ to people on what to follow. However, failure can surely set an example what we shouldn’t follow.
- An optimist doesn’t find failure as a reason to repent but as a reason to prepare well for next time.!
‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10000 ways that won’t work – Thomas A. Edison
6. Failure helps us in making peace with ourselves.!
The best thing we can do after a failure is to forgive ourselves.! Taking responsibility is not equal to taking blame. There is a brief period of intolerance, distress and disappointment after a failure. The longer we hold on to them, the longer it takes us in to the darkness.
The next step of failure would be to find the next possible solution. For this we need confidence. To gain confidence, we first need to make peace with ourselves. Failure helps us for sure to obtain a mind state of inferiority. We can overcome this if we forgive ourselves.!
We can never get peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves – Dalai Lama
7. Controls ‘Over-Confidence’
There is a ‘thin’ line between confidence and overconfidence. This makes it hard to know if we are confident or overconfident. Failure helps us to keep that in check. An accomplishment or a praise is often followed by overconfidence. We never know that we are overconfident till we fail.
There is a saying that “Good swimmers often drown”. Failures makes sure that we don’t fall in to this trap.
An optimist knows how to turn his biggest failure in to next biggest success.! A pessimist otherwise knows how to come up with reasons.
